Our Story

Buffalo Glass Company was founded in 1956 by J.D. Novak on Waugh Drive, just a few blocks from the bayou that gave the company its name. What started as a small neighborhood glass shop has grown into one of Houston’s most trusted names in residential and commercial glass — but the values haven’t changed. We’re still family-owned, still locally operated, and still focused on treating every customer like a neighbor rather than a transaction.

Over the decades, our team has installed and repaired glass in homes, storefronts, office towers, and everything in between. We’ve replaced windows after hurricanes, fitted shower enclosures in newly remodeled bathrooms, secured storefronts with commercial-grade glass and locking systems, and helped contractors meet tight deadlines on new construction projects. In Business Since 1956

In 1956, J.D. Novak opened Buffalo Glass Company on Waugh Drive, not far from its namesake of Buffalo Bayou. Since our doors opened, we’ve grown alongside the city, from the opening of the Texas Medical Center to the roar of the Astros’ first World Series win. As a family-owned and operated business, we’ve built our reputation on quality, reliability, and a commitment to serving our neighbors.

So what else has been going on in Houston since we opened our doors?

• 1956 – The Texas Medical Center officially opens, solidifying Houston’s position as a major medical hub. That same year, Buffalo Glass Company opened its doors just a few miles away, ready to grow alongside the city’s expansion.
• 1960 – The Houston Astros play their first game as a Major League Baseball team, giving the city a new source of civic pride.
• 1967 – NASA selects Houston as the home for the Johnson Space Center, forever linking the city to space exploration and drawing new residents and businesses to the area.
• 1972 – The Astrodome, the world’s first fully-enclosed, air-conditioned major league baseball stadium, opens — a landmark that put Houston engineering on the map.
• 1980s – The oil bust significantly impacts Houston’s economy, testing local businesses across the city, including our own. We came through it the same way we always have: by focusing on our customers.
• 1986 – Houston hosts the Astroworld theme park’s grand opening, a fixture of family entertainment for generations of Houstonians.
• 2001 – The Enron scandal erupts, shaking the city’s economic confidence but ultimately proving Houston’s resilience as the local economy diversified and recovered.
• 2005 – Hurricane Katrina devastates New Orleans, Louisiana, leading to a massive influx of evacuees to Houston — a reminder of how quickly our community rallies to support those in need.
• 2017 – Hurricane Harvey causes catastrophic flooding in Houston and surrounding areas. In the aftermath, our team helped many neighbors repair and replace storm-damaged windows and glass doors.
